Girl Scout donations to the Women's Resource Center
Our community is deeply fortunate to benefit from the work of the Women's Resource Center. The WRC is committed to ending domestic violence while supporting and empowering individuals who have experienced such violence. Since 1977, the organization has compassionately and respectfully provided direct services to survivors of domestic violence.
Currently the WRC serves more than 1,100 survivors annually. They provide critical support including emergency shelter, transitional housing, court advocacy, counseling, and other crisis advocacy services. Jessica Walsh, Executive Director of the WRC, describes the efforts of the organization:
“Every day, our advocates are working to support survivors on their journey of healing and to empower communities to collectively create homes and neighborhoods that are free from violence. This is hard and necessary work. I am inspired, continually, by the strength of the survivors we serve and the dedication of our team.”

The WRC is committed to preventing domestic violence by building healthy, strong, empowered communities, serving as the backbone agency for the Newport Health Equity Zone. Its Transitional Housing Program supports survivors just getting back on their feet after fleeing abuse, by providing an apartment, utilities, and case management for 6-24 months. It is noteworthy that the WRC is the only domestic violence shelter in the state that co-houses pets and people, eliminating a significant barrier to leaving unsafe situations for survivors with pets.
Oftentimes, the complex challenges being addressed require the expertise and resources of various organizations. With this in mind, the WRC partners with an array of outstanding community-based organizations, including Aquidneck Land Trust, Aquidneck Community Table, Community Blessings Foundation, Newport Prevention Coalition, Newport County Community Mental Health, Newport Tree Conservancy, East Bay Community Action Program, Child & Family Services, Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, and the Church Community Housing Corporation.
