Spotlight on Newport Sings

Very enthusiastic participants in the Newport Sings summer camp

Residents of Aquidneck Island know the exuberance of music. And many of them have experienced it through Newport Sings, an organization that creates opportunities for children and adults to discover the joy and power of singing together in community.

Since 2019 Newport Sings has been welcoming singers for weekly sessions. No previous experience is needed and no audition is required. All participants are embraced for their unique voices and are encouraged to grow and have fun. As founder and Executive Director Elizabeth Woodhouse describes, "Newport Sings is a true community program, aimed to connect with our neighbors through our shared love of singing together. When we contribute our unique voice to something bigger and greater than what we can achieve alone, we experience a sense of belonging and a whole lot of joy!"

Newport Sings offers varied singing opportunities for participants of all ages. Programming for children includes the Newport County Youth Chorus, an after-school program for students in grades 1-6, and a summer camp. The Community Sing program offers weekly sing-along classes for children and adults with disabilities. Multi-generations programs include Aquidneck Singers and Quorus.

Luminous Voices, a new program that launched this fall, provides services to residents in assisted living, memory care, and hospice care. For residents who wish to sing, classes invite them to sing songs that were popular in their youth. For others who are ailing and isolated, a small ensemble performs for them. In both instances, the experiences are comforting and joyful.

Community members are invited to attend Newport Sings' upcoming Winter Concert on Saturday, December 13 at 4pm, held at the Cavalry United Methodist Church in Middletown.

Newport Sings will be welcoming new singers to their programs in January. Programs are either free of offered on a sliding scale to be accessible to all who would like to participate.
