The Gruben Charitable Foundation sponsors lecture on burnout at Cape Cod symposium

On September 16, 2018, the International Conference on Addiction and Associate Disorders (iCAAD) & the Gruben Charitable Foundation presented international expert speaker Dr Philippe Wuyts at the prestigious Cape Cod Symposium on Addictive Disorders, Hyannis, MA.

Dr Wuyts’ presentation, "The Human Fire Extinguished – The Rise of Burnout" looked into the reasons for the current increase in Burnout Syndrome prevalence on a global level.

Starting off presenting research data, the Dr Wuyts continued with a discussion of Burnout Syndrome’s complex psychopathology and development over time, how chronic stress leads to the emergence of symptoms and eventually burnout, and into the important differences with compassion fatigue syndrome and major depressive disorder. The presentation also engaged the audience in a broader discussion on how important changes (globalization, automation and technology) in modern society are contributing to the rise of burnout pathology.

Both iCAAD and C4 (organizers of CCSAD) recognize the need for large international conferences to collaborate and cross-fertilize to enhance the qualities of their individual programming, and to further the development of global best practice.

This presentation was supported and made possible by: The Gruben Charitable Foundation.

About Dr Philippe Wuyts

Dr Philippe Wuyts obtained his MD from the KU Leuven, Belgium in 2006. He trained in general adult psychiatry at the UPC KU Leuven and at King's College London and holds an MBA from EDHEC Business School.

Dr Philippe Wuyts is currently active in his private practice in Paris where he works predominantly with the international population of expats, students and diplomats. He is a preferred practitioner with several international organizations, academic institutions and embassies from countries around the world. He was the lead investigator for the International Burnout (Boss) Study for Belgium and has been involved in developing best clinical practice guidelines for Burnout pathology, prevention and treatment for many years.

Moreover, Philippe is a true Pan-European citizen, born in Belgium, trained in Belgium, London and France and practicing in Paris in 3 different languages and, last but not least married to a Greek wife. His double qualification MBA & MD Psychiatrist together with a broad multi-societal vision gives him a genuine unique understanding of social aspects of burnout syndrome.

Dr Wuyts was presented by iCAAD’s Academic Director Christophe Sauerwein MBA, MSc, PgD:

“I met Philippe two years ago in Paris where we asked him to talk about Burnout at our iCAAD Paris Conference. Ric Ohrstrom, C4’s Chairman  and myself were immediately conquered by the modern human vision of Philippe on Burnout and we saw many links and overlaps with functioning addiction, through compensation, potentialisation and much more. We discussed bringing his unique point of view to CCSAD delegates and are delighted that this has become a reality,” says Sauerwein.

PRESENTING SPONSOR: THE GRUBEN CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

The presentation was sponsored by The Gruben Charitable Foundation, a family philanthropy based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, whose mission is to preserve, improve, and rehabilitate the health of people and the places in which they live. The vision Gruben aspires to achieve is to support non-profit organizations and their programs that are holistic (body, mind, emotional and spiritual) in their approach to the preservation and maintenance of healthy ecosystems and communities through education and compassionate care for people and places.

The Gruben Charitable Charitable Foundation has recently supported and funded a new family addiction recovery program at Rhode Island Hospital.

Further bolstering its services, Rhode Island Hospital recently received a generous $184,000 gift from the Gruben Charitable Foundation to fund the Lifespan Addiction Recovery Center's Family Education and Support Program.

The Foundation’s trustee and Executive director, Diana Oehrli, is the daughter of Elizabeth “Lisette” Prince of Newport, who together with her children, including sons Guillaume and Regis de Ramel, established The Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute with a transformational gift from The Frederick Henry Prince 1932 Trust.

“My family’s historical philanthropy has always centered on health, so focusing on addiction keeps with that tradition,” says Diana. “Addiction is a painful, chronic disease and I truly believe educating the family is key to helping people get better and halting addiction’s spread to future generations.”

Developed specifically for family and friends of individuals struggling with opioid use disorder, the Family Education and Support Program employs a dual-pronged approach. Patients and their loved ones together attend a weekly group session, learning about addiction, recovery, treatment, and interpersonal dynamics. Separately, family and friends are also provided a group forum to share their experiences and the challenges of supporting someone in recovery.

“Family and friends play critical roles in helping individuals with substance use issues enter and remain in treatment—our goal is to empower them in a way that makes a positive impact on the long-term recovery of their loved one,” said Kirsten Langdon, PhD, a clinical psychologist and Director of Behavioral Therapy at the Lifespan Recovery Center. “We could not be more grateful to Diana for her extraordinary generosity and her commitment to this community health crisis.” Adds Diana, “There is an incredible need to provide comprehensive treatment, and I believe Rhode Island Hospital and Lifespan have begun to create a model for addiction recovery medical centers across our country.”
